Newcastle - Mexico flights

FLIGHTS b/w the North East and Mexico are going to resume as the swine flu crisis eases.

Now Thomson and First Choice have said they hope to resume flights from Sunday.

That means Monday’s flight from Newcastle Airport to Cancun will go ahead as planned, with customers being contacted by Thomson if there are any changes to their itinerary.

The Foreign Office has updated its advise and is no longer advising against travel to the country, where the H1N1 flu outbreak started.

A spokeswoman for Newcastle Airport said they would follow all advice when dealing with passengers returning from Mexico to stop any chance of swine flu spreading further.

She said: “The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated their advice to Mexico, and no longer advise against travel there. As a result Newcastle International Airport’s flight programme to Cancun with Thomson will re-commence, with our first out-bound flight on Monday May 25. We will continue to take advice and guidance from all relevant government agencies in regards to receiving inbound passengers from Mexico.”

While travel restrictions were in place, Thomson and First Choice cancelled outbound flights up to and including May 22, with all customers offered alternative options or a free cancellation.

Both companies said that, due to all the circumstances, there would be special terms for holidays over the next few weeks and normal booking conditions would not apply until July 1.

A spokesman for Thomson said: “Customers due to travel from May 24 onwards will be contacted by our Customer Services team in advance of their date of travel should there be any changes to their original itinerary as regards either their accommodation or flight date and/or time.

“Those travelling between May 23 and May 27, including the flight from Newcastle, may amend their holiday free of charge and select a different destination or alternative date up to the same value already booked. Should they wish to cancel, a full cancellation fee will apply as per our terms and conditions.

“Those travelling from May 28 to June 30 may amend their holiday at a reduced amendment fee of £50 per person (including children). Should they wish to cancel, a full cancellation fee will apply.”

Normal booking conditions apply for travel from July 1 onwards.
