Fire at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal delays flights

The fire, believed to have been caused by construction work at the International Departure Lounge, also forced the evacuation of about 1,000 people.

Dozens of bottles of liquor and plastic security bags in a duty free outlet storage room were destroyed.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad operations senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad said the fire was put out by his staff in less than five minutes, before the arrival of firemen.

"We had to evacuate more than 1,000 people because of the smoke."
Azmi said the AirAsia flights were delayed because passenger check-in processing was suspended for 90 minutes.

AirAsia Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, however, said some 25 flights were delayed.

"This is our peak season. I'm estimating that more than 10,000 of our passengers would be experiencing slight delays in their flights. There will be no flight cancellations."
